Church Street brings together two historic Downtown Lynchburg buildings whose surviving architecture and former uses give them identities that cannot be replicated by new construction.
EIGHT-O-ONE
Early 20th century
Historic preservation records associate the building with Hygeia Hospital, founded by Lynchburg physician Dr. John W. Dillard.
Later chapter
The same preservation record identifies the building as the Piedmont Hotel, giving 801 a rare hospital-to-hotel history.
Mid-century and beyond
801 later served commercial and office uses, including Forehand Realty, before its modern adaptive reuse into residential loft apartments and commercial space.
Today
EIGHT-O-ONE continues the building's next chapter as downtown residences.
The Calvert
The Calvert name has a genuine connection to 815 Church Street. Historical records associate Walker, Mosby & Calvert with the address, while the building itself preserves a rich collection of woodwork, tile, stairs, doors and traditional details.
Today, those historic features remain part of everyday life in the building rather than being reduced to decoration.
